Short-Term Study Abroad Program

Explore Merida and the Yucatán through visits to weaving cooperatives, ancient Mayan ruins, cenotes, and local farms. Volunteer in support of UN SDG 2.3, which aims to double the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, especially women, indigenous peoples, and family farmers, through access to resources, knowledge, and market opportunities. This 7-day adventure offers meaningful service and deep immersion in Mexico's culture.

Volunteer initiatives are intended to solve real-world problems, identified by our host community partners. All projects are designed to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Educational Opportunities

The unique, online, pre-departure global service-learning and citizenship course will prepare you to make the most of your time in Mexico. In the course, you will learn the history and culture of the destination, the mission and vision of our partners, and UN Sustainable Development Goals. This GSLC experience is designed to foster the development of educated, compassionate, global citizens and leaders.

Subject Areas in addition to history, culture, architecture, political systems, etc

1. Culinary Arts: The cooking classes provide hands-on experience in traditional Yucatecan cuisine, offering practical skills in food preparation, recipe development, and culinary techniques.

2. Agriculture / Horticulture: By supporting UN SDG 2.3 and visiting local agricultural cooperatives, participants engage with sustainable farming practices, community-based agriculture, and food production, enhancing their understanding of agricultural productivity and resource management.

3. Hospitality and Tourism: Exploring Mérida, visiting cultural sites, and enjoying activities such as walking tours and beach days connects to the hospitality and tourism industries, promoting cultural tourism and the role of tourism in local economies.

4. Textile Arts / Fashion Design: The weaving demonstrations at cooperatives offer insight into traditional textile arts, providing participants with an understanding of craftsmanship, artisan skills, and the economic impact of the textile industry.

5. Cultural Studies / Social Studies: The immersion in Mexico's history, heritage, and cultural practices provides valuable insights into cultural preservation, local history, and social structures, contributing to global citizenship and cultural appreciation.

This program blends service learning with hands-on skills in various CTE disciplines while promoting sustainable development and cultural awareness.

Mayan cooking classes, visits to ancient ruins, scenic boat tours, relaxing beach days, and exciting wildlife spotting adventures.

Volunteer in Oaxaca City, Mexico's artistic, culinary and cultural capital with a women's cooperative in support of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 1 No Poverty, UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 Quality Education, and UN SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth.

Travelers on this program will explore historic Oaxaca City, visit weaving cooperatives, adventure to ancient ruins, and hike to a petrified waterfall. Cooking classes, walking tours, concerts, and museums are on the itinerary. The magic of Mexico will come to life on this 7-day adventure.

Impact Areas

This global service-learning and citizenship experience supports UN Sustainable Development Goal 2.3 - By 2030, double the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, in particular women, indigenous peoples, family farmers, pastoralists and fishers, including through secure and equal access to land, other productive resources and inputs, knowledge, financial services, markets and opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment.
